Welcome to the 2024-2025 Science Outreach Catalyst Kit (SOCK)! The theme this year is dragonflies. Dragonflies can fly backwards, right themselves when falling (even when unconscious), control each wing individually, have near 360-degree vision, and can see UV light. Dragonflies are full of physics. All kinds of equations go into understanding their different modes of flying–hovering, gliding, and taking off. The flight patterns and efficiency of dragonflies inspire engineering flight technologies. Dragonflies come in a remarkable range of colours, some hues produced from light scattering and layers of cuticle that produce thin-film interference. In short, dragonflies are a whole bunch of physics concepts packed into one little guy. They’re awesome and we’re not the only people who think so. Many physicists are currently investigating their flight mechanics and colouration. Now, so can you! This kit is designed to be a full table set up at a physics outreach event for people of all ages.See below for more information on what is included in this year’s SOCK!

Demos Included:

  • Dragonfly Sight: UV Light and Electromagnetic Waves
  • Dragonfly Muscles: Forces and Movement
