Drexel University awarded 2015 SPS Chapter Research Award

Zone and Chapter: Drexel University

Project

Project Name: Cosmic Ray Induced Bit-Flipping Experiment (CRIBFLEX)

Project Leaders: Matthew Parsons

Chapter Advisors: Luis Cruz-Cruz

Project Description: The SPS students at Drexel University will study the correlation between cosmic ray flux and errors cosmic rays induce in electronic memory storage devices. They plan to fly a weather balloon outfitted with a Geiger counter and a RAM memory device to collect data at various altitudes. Understanding the correlation would better inform memory device protection efforts for airplanes and other mid-altitude vessels.
