We are just one year away from the 2025 Physics and Astronomy Congress, which will be hosted in Denver, Colorado, on Halloween weekend. If you’ve heard of this life-changing event, you might think that the congress is only for undergraduate physics and astronomy students—this could not be more wrong! Sigma Pi Sigma and SPS alums are welcome to attend the regular program, and there are some special events you don’t want to miss. We invite you to browse the list below, and we hope to see you in October 2025!

Alumni Networking Event

Meet fellow physics and astronomy alums from all walks of life at the Sigma Pi Sigma networking event on the afternoon of Saturday, November 1st. If you are interested in attending, please fill out the form at https://forms.gle/nyQHfAwBkMrY9zLS6 to receive more information as it becomes available.

Career and Graduate School Panels

Be an integral part of the Physics and Astronomy Congress by offering your advice and words of wisdom to the next generation of scientists. SPS is looking for volunteers to participate in breakout session panels on working in industry, graduate school, and other topics. If you’re interested in volunteering, please reach out to sps-programs@aip.org .

Grad School Fair & Expo Hall

Are you looking for excellent students to join your graduate program or summer research program? Do you help recruit for entry-level positions at your company? Do you have products or programs you’d like to share with undergraduates in the physical sciences? If so, get a booth in the exhibit hall! The Physics and Astronomy Congress is the largest gathering of undergraduate students in physics and astronomy in the country. The hotel will be filled with the best and brightest of the new generation, looking to network and grow with you.

Lunch with a Scientist

Lunch with a Scientist is one of the meeting’s biggest hits! On the last day of the conference, small groups of students and professionals have lunch together. The meal is a great opportunity for students to learn more about what they can do after graduation, network, and meet potential mentors. As an alum, it’s a great way to give back to the community, support students, and meet your next mentee, intern, graduate student, or employee!

We encourage you to participate in these events and attend the entire conference, including the plenary talks, workshops, breakout sessions, and tours over the three-day congress. The 2025 Physics and Astronomy Congress will be an event like no other—you don’t want to miss out! Learn more about these opportunities and stay up-to-date by visiting the congress website at students.aip.org/congress.

On April 8, 2024, parts of North America experienced a total solar eclipse, and much of the rest of the continent experienced a partial eclipse. In the spring issues of Radiations and the SPS Observer, we asked members to submit their eclipse stories and photos. You did not disappoint! Please enjoy this collection of reflections and images.

In 2023 the society announced the new Sigma Pi Sigma Leadership Scholarships, created to honor society members within ten years of their induction date who are pursuing an advanced education in physics, astronomy, or a closely related field. The initial scholarships were awarded thanks to a generous donation from longtime SPS supporter and AIP board director Jack Hehn, through the Hehn Family Charitable Trust. Here, two of these scholars reflect on their undergraduate journey, their membership in Sigma Pi Sigma, and how the Leadership Scholarship is supporting the next stage of their journey.
