Eliza Morris

About

As an undergraduate I served in my local SPS club as an officer from nearly the first moment I landed on campus. That community and support is what made physics fun, but also what kept many of us working together to finish our assignments late into the night. 3 years ago I started as an Assistant Professor and was very excited to be able to step into the role of SPS advisor. I love working to support the club as they develop their vision and work to support all members of the physics community on campus. Over the past year I have worked with them to develop a mentorship program aimed at helping to promote diversity and inclusiveness. My research focuses on biophysics and physics education research. At the moment I am measuring the stiffness of fruit fly guts and exploring the benefits of peer leadership in the classroom.

Alum Location: Sacramento, California
Education Level: PhD
Disciplines: other, applied, computational, condensed matter, geophysics, materials

Job Sector: academia
Recent position: Assistant Professor of Physics, California State University, Sacramento
Job Description: As a professor in physics at a primarily undergraduate institution my main role is teaching. I have been very fortunate to have secured sufficient release time to be able to carry on a moderate amount of research. I have 4 main projects, 3 of which focus on specific scientific instruments that I have developed and set up in my soft condensed matter physics lab on campus. We have run experiments on our laser tweezers, bulk shear rheometer, and most recently our micro-Newton force extension rig (just this last week we were running measurements on some fruit fly intestines for a project related to autism spectrum disorder). In addition to teaching and research part of my job as a professor is service to both my institution and the community at large.
